MSSB is a five-piece acoustic band from New Jersey playing traditional bluegrass with hints of country and folk.
Singer/songwriter Sheila Shukla – with help from her children, her sister Rita, and the Magnolia Street String Band – has created a new album, By the Light of the Moon.
Magnolia Street String Band started in 2013 with Matthew Backes and Sheila Vee, Paul Prestipino, Bobby Baxmeyer and Ron Greenstein. Their first full-length album, Wrong Side of the Rain, was released in June, 2019.
Since 2014 the band has played a steady stream of shows to ever larger and more appreciative audiences. They have played festival stages, state fairs, hootenannies, honky tonks, breweries, fundraisers, radio shows, weddings and more. Their music is grounded in traditional bluegrass with elements of cosmic Americana, country, and old-time as well as original compositions mixed in. The band’s sound features sweet vocals and compelling instrumentals. Overall, their take on bluegrass feels old but relevant, traditional but personal, and well crafted but soulful and direct.
After Backes retired from the band and Prestopino passed, Sheila Vee, Ron Greenstein and Bobby Baxmeyer continued on with Eli Felton, Will Pable, Terry McGill and other frequent collaborators.
“By the Light of the Moon”, a family bluegrass album was released October 4th 2024 and has been well-received. The album was written and performed by Sheila Vee & family and arranged, produced and performed by Magnolia Street String Band and Bob Harris.
The title track “By the Light of the Moon” was featured in the Bluegrass Situation.
